Poets United Midweek Motif ~ Money

Cabaret ~ Money

 💵

“There is only one class in the community that thinks more about money than the rich, and that is the poor.” ― Oscar Wilde

“Money is like manure; it's not worth a thing unless it's spread around encouraging young things to grow.”  ― Thornton Wilder

“Money does not change the sickness, only the symptoms.”

Fiddler on the Roof ~ If I Were a Rich Man

Midweek Motif ~ Money

It's Women's History Month, so feel free to link women's history and money in your poem if you wish.  I think poets of all genders would do  marvelous and beautiful things with money.

What do you think?

Your Challenge:  Wend ideas of money throughout your new poem. What does money do? What did it do? What can it do?

by Sara Teasdale

I have no riches but my thoughts,
Yet these are wealth enough for me;
My thoughts of you are golden coins
Stamped in the mint of memory;

And I must spend them all in song,
For thoughts, as well as gold, must be
Left on the hither side of death
To gain their immortality.
by
Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires
With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.

But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
'Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

We didn’t merely saunter decade by decade.
We swept on past de Beauvoir and Friedan,
and took courage from Carolyn Kizer’s knife-blade
Pro Femina: I will speak about women
of letters for I’m in the racket, urging,
Stand up and be hated, and swear not to sleep with editors.
If a woman is to write, Virginia Woolf
has Mary Beton declare, she has to have
five hundred a year and a room with a lock on the door,
a sacred space where Shakespeare’s sister Judith
might have equaled his prodigious gift
or not. She might have simply floated there,
set loose in the privilege of privacy, her self
unwritten, under no one else’s eyes…

    1. Some say NOT having money is the root of all evil. So we had to have it.

    1. It's gentleness surprised me. I love that it feels like a song.

  4. Ok, so I'm sharing the poem I wrote, though I had another in mind, one about a relentless need to earn survival daily. I may get to that one yet. I think this one came from the sound of putting things in my wallet.

Happy midweek, everyone. Stay safe and warm and creative!

  5. Morning PU poets! I have been too busy to write lately. Spring is getting to me...lol! Alone is a good poem I love her work.

Money is a good prompt, I'll give it some thought and be back with a poem. It's something I don't have!

I missed everyone so can't wait to read. Have a good week!

  6. Ah, for the days when one could live on 500 a year! LOL. Spring flowers are blooming on the west coast and today will be a beach day. Yay! Have a good one, poet friends.

    1. Of all the money problems I have, rent is the most scary. No one means to end up on the street. Landlords and landowners need to be ashamed they're so greedy.

    2. Hey Sherry! I don't remember those days, really. You are older than I thought!

And Bekkie--I agree. I almost own a house with an apartment to rent, and I try to talk myself into raising rent to cover the costs. I might could, if my renter wasn't a long-time friend.

    3. Hard decision, Susan. Lol! I don't blame renters for needing to keep up with taxes, etc. but so many are plain greedy. I can't imagine that's you!

  8. It is the love of money that is evil, not money itself. It will be interesting to see where this takes people. It took me to the 1890s with Dorian, as usual. This was a most interesting motif and so many good poems came from it.

    1. I'm not even so sure that loving the money is evil. I'd like to try it should way open. Perhaps it is greed, hoarding and ignoring consequences that make money become evil. And getting it too easily.
